The hidden oasis where Dubai still retains its calm
Hidden among the narrow historic alleys of Al Fahidi, the Arabian Tea House is one of those places where the futuristic rhythm of Dubai seems to disappear completely. Surrounded by sand-colored walls, white bougainvillea and traditional lanterns, this small hidden courtyard retains the atmosphere of old Dubai long before skyscrapers and grand avenues.
The Al Fahidi area was one of the first neighborhoods built along the Dubai Creek and for centuries was inhabited by pearl merchants, fishermen and families who made a living from maritime trade between Arabia, Persia and India. Many of the traditional houses in the neighborhood were designed with the famous “wind towers,” an ancient natural ventilation system used to cool homes long before air conditioning existed.
The Arabian Tea House carefully recovered one of these old traditional houses to turn it into a small cultural oasis where you can still feel the aromas, flavors and details of the most authentic Dubai. Arabic tea with mint, dates, traditional porcelain and long conversations are part of the daily atmosphere of the patio.
One of the most special moments comes at dusk, when the warm lights begin to illuminate the courtyard and the silence of the historic neighborhood completely contrasts with the modern and futuristic image that is normally associated with Dubai.
A perfect corner to discover a much calmer, humane and traditional side of the United Arab Emirates.
