Büyük Valide Han Rooftop

The secret roof where Istanbul dominates two continents

Hidden among the narrow streets near the Grand Bazaar, Büyük Valide Han houses one of the most surprising and mysterious rooftops in Istanbul. From its ancient Ottoman roofs, the domes, minarets and the Bosphorus appear stretching between Europe and Asia like a scene frozen in time.

The building was built in the 17th century by Kösem Sultan, one of the most powerful women in the history of the Ottoman Empire and mother of two sultans. For centuries, this enormous caravanserai functioned as a refuge for traders who arrived in Istanbul from Persia, Arabia and different regions of the Silk Road loaded with spices, fabrics and jewels.

Its interior patios still preserve traditional workshops, small shops and a chaotic atmosphere very different from the more touristy part of the city. But the real secret is up there. After climbing narrow stairs and passing through ancient corridors, you reach the historic roofs of the han, from where you get one of the most impressive views of Istanbul.

From there you can see Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the waters of the Golden Horn and dozens of Ottoman domes stretching to the horizon. At dusk, when the call to prayer begins to be heard from different parts of the city and the lights begin to illuminate the minarets, the place seems suspended between centuries of history.

For years this rooftop remained practically unknown outside of photographers and locals, becoming one of those corners that make it feel like there are still hidden secrets in Istanbul.
