Train Nine Arch Bridge Sunrise

The colonial bridge where Sri Lanka wakes up in the fog

Hidden among the mountains and tea plantations of Ella, the Nine Arch Bridge is one of the most magical and cinematic corners of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by tropical jungle, fog and paths lost in the green, this old stone bridge seems taken from another era.

Built during the British colonial era at the beginning of the 20th century, the bridge became famous for a curious local history. According to legend, the steel intended for construction was diverted by the British for World War I, forcing local engineers to finish the structure using only stone, brick and cement. That is why the Nine Arch Bridge is still considered an authentic masterpiece of colonial engineering today.

But the most special moment comes at dawn. As fog slowly covers the mountains and the first rays of sun illuminate the jungle, Sri Lanka's old blue train crosses the bridge at low speed creating one of the most iconic scenes in the entire country.

The sound of the train, the humid aroma of the tea plantations and the silence of the mountains make the place have a completely unique atmosphere. Far away from the chaos of cities and tropical beaches, here Sri Lanka shows a much calmer, greener and nostalgic side.

A perfect corner to sit among the jungle and see how time seems to move much more slowly.
