Tianzifang

The hidden labyrinth where Shanghai preserves its soul

Hidden among the old alleys of the French Concession, Tianzifang is one of those places that seem to survive the passage of time in the middle of a futuristic city. While skyscrapers and grand avenues dominate modern Shanghai, this small labyrinth of narrow streets preserves the most authentic, artistic and bohemian essence of the city.

There are no marked routes here. The experience consists precisely of getting lost among passageways full of hidden cafes, small art galleries, vintage shops, tiny terraces and red lanterns hanging between historic buildings. Each corner seems different from the last, and there is always the feeling that behind the next corner there is something new to discover.

The most curious thing about Tianzifang is that many of its shops and bars are built inside old traditional “Shikumen” houses, a type of typical Shanghai architecture that mixes Chinese and European influences. In fact, many families still live in some of these buildings while travelers and locals stroll through the same alleys, creating a unique mix between daily life and creative atmosphere.

As evening falls, the warm lights begin to illuminate the streets and the neighborhood completely changes its atmosphere. The music comes from the small hidden bars, the terraces slowly fill up and the frenetic pace of Shanghai seems to disappear for a few hours.

A perfect place to walk aimlessly, discover small hidden gems and feel a much more intimate and human version of one of the largest cities in the world.
