Ikseondong Hanok Village
The secret labyrinth where old Seoul came back to life
Hidden among the huge avenues and skyscrapers of Seoul, Ikseondong is one of those places where it seems that time moves much more slowly. This small maze of narrow alleys preserves some of the old Korean hanok houses built more than 100 years ago, creating a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the city.
For decades, the neighborhood was virtually forgotten as Seoul transformed into one of the most futuristic cities in the world. Many of the traditional houses were on the verge of disappearing, until artists, small merchants and young entrepreneurs began to carefully restore them to turn them into hidden cafes, intimate terraces, bookstores and small restaurants full of charm.
The most special thing about Ikseondong is precisely that mix between tradition and modernity that defines South Korea so well. Behind old wooden doors appear minimalist cafes, interior gardens illuminated by lanterns and small spaces where the original architecture of the hanok homes is still maintained.
As evening falls, the warm lights begin to illuminate the alleys and the neighborhood completely changes its atmosphere. Locals and travelers stroll between small terraces while the aroma of coffee, Korean food and traditional tea fills the neighborhood's narrow streets.
A perfect corner to discover a much more intimate, creative and authentic version of Seoul, far from the frenetic pace of the big city.
