The Projector
The secret cinema where Singapore shows its most alternative side
Hidden inside a former Golden Mile Tower building, The Projector has become one of the most creative and different venues in Singapore. Far from the futuristic skyscrapers and luxury shopping centers, this old cinema recovered the retro aesthetics of the 70s to become the meeting point for artists, musicians, students and lovers of independent cinema.
Neon lights, vintage sofas, old posters and dim lights create a completely different atmosphere from the rest of the city. Here arthouse films, forgotten classics and alternative documentaries are screened while the public drinks coffee, beer or cocktails in small spaces decorated with underground aesthetics.
The building where it is located also has a lot of history. Golden Mile Tower was one of the most modern complexes in Singapore in the 70s and for decades it symbolized the most modern and cosmopolitan face of the country. As time went by, the area aged and ended up becoming a space full of alternative culture, hidden restaurants and small local businesses.
One of the most curious details of The Projector is that many of the original seats and vintage elements of the old cinema were preserved during the restoration, maintaining that nostalgic air that makes it so special today.
At night, the atmosphere changes completely. Neon lights illuminate the interior, soft music plays and the place is filled with a creative energy that is difficult to find in a city as orderly and futuristic as Singapore.
