Begijnhof is one of Amsterdam's most unique places, an
old convent built in 1346 where, for many years, the Beguines lived: "women who did not belong to a church order but had decided to dedicate their lives to helping those in need. They renounced a private life, promising chastity and joining this type of community, but they could, in any case, leave the beguinage at any time." It is a place of immense charm: you go from being on the busy Spuistraat to a quiet and peaceful space where, although it has undergone some renovations, everything is as it was centuries ago. With due respect, it's as if you've stepped through a magical portal directly into the Middle Ages.

Curiosity: Right here is Amsterdam's oldest house –Het Houten Huis–, at number 34 to be exact. It dates back to 1420 and, with its peculiar black facade, it is one of only two Amsterdam houses that is still made of wood, despite the 1521 prohibition.
