The viewpoint where Myanmar turns golden at sunset
Rising above the city of Mandalay, this sacred hill offers one of the most impressive and spiritual views in Myanmar. After climbing hundreds of stairs covered with small temples and golden bells, the landscape opens up showing an ocean of pagodas, monasteries and mountains disappearing into the horizon.
According to Buddhist tradition, Buddha himself would have prophesied centuries ago that, at the foot of this hill, a great city dedicated to the expansion of Buddhism would arise. Much later, Mandalay was born, becoming the last royal capital of the Burmese kingdom.
As evening falls, the place changes completely. Red-robed monks, local pilgrims and travelers gather in silence as the sun turns the pagodas gold and the Irrawaddy River begins to disappear into the mist. The Buddhist bells ring softly in the wind and the entire atmosphere conveys a calm that is difficult to describe.
A perfect corner to contemplate Myanmar from above and understand why this country remains one of the most spiritual places in Asia.
