Piazzale Michelangelo was built on the hill south of Florence’s historic center following the design of architect Giuseppe Poggi. Florence was the capital of Italy during this period, 1869, and the whole city was undergoing an intense urban renewal: the "lungarni" (the streets that follow the course of the Arno) were created; on the right side, in place of the 14th-century walls, the Ring Road was opened, and on the left side an 8 km tree-lined panoramic road was laid out, now called Viale dei Colli, at whose summit Piazzale Michelangelo was built as a panoramic terrace over the city.
Located at the top of Hotel Medici, right in the heart of Florence, View on Art Rooftop Cocktail Bar combines a casual atmosphere with some truly magnificent views. The sixth-floor rooftop, quite basic but charming, has both an indoor lounge and an outdoor terrace, where the main feature of this place is found: the incredible close-up views of Brunelleschi’s distinctive dome and Giotto’s bell tower. Generally open from noon until midnight, this is the perfect rooftop bar in Florence to enjoy a relaxing drink with the best views of the Duomo.
